How It Works for Middle School

Building Belonging and Resilience in the Middle Years

Middle school is a time of change, growth, and challenge. Students are developing independence, navigating friendships, and figuring out where they fit in the world. The Positivity Project’s (P2) middle school character ed helps schools guide students through this critical stage with a shared language of character strengths and relationships—building belonging, resilience, and a positive school culture.

Why Character Ed Matters in Middle School

Middle schoolers are at a crossroads: friendships shift, academic pressure increases, responsibility is added to their shoulders, and emotions often run high. Without intentional support, these years can leave students feeling disconnected or discouraged.

P2 helps middle schools by:

  • Giving students and staff a common Tier 1 language for relationships and character.
  • Strengthening peer and teacher-student relationships to reduce conflict.
  • Supporting motivation, connections, and self-awareness.
  • Creating a school-wide culture where students feel connected and valued.

How Implementation Works

P2 is flexible and designed to fit into the unique rhythms of middle school. Schools choose an implementation model that works best for their schedule and culture, with ongoing support from P2 specialists. Schools begin by creating a small leadership team that may include principals, counselors, teachers, and student leaders. P2 provides training, planning tools, and ongoing coaching to make implementation simple and sustainable.

Flexible Models for Delivery

Whatever the model, the key is consistency—regular exposure helps middle school students build habits and deepen reflection. Discover how Farnsworth Middle School created consistency with a custom calendar that fit its schedule:

Building School-wide Culture

P2 works best when it’s visible beyond the classroom. Schools bring P2 to life by:

  • Morning announcements about the weekly strength.
  • Student-created posters, videos, and bulletin boards.
  • Student-led news programs showcasing character strength stories around the school.
  • Monthly character challenges with fun incentives.
  • Recognition programs for students and staff.
  • Assemblies and events that celebrate P2 strengths.

When P2 is woven into daily routines, students see that character and relationships matter everywhere in the school.

Supporting Educators & Families

Teachers and families play a huge role in shaping middle school culture. P2 makes it easy for both groups to engage.

  • For Staff: Kickoff training, check-ins, monthly PD resources, success stories shared in staff meetings, and quick-start guides for new or hesitant teachers.
  • For Families: Weekly newsletters and P2 for Families resources (English & Spanish) connect the classroom to the home. Schools also host family nights and share updates on social media.

Impact on Attendance, Behavior, and Culture

Across 40 schools in Clovis Unified School District, implementing P2 district-wide led to remarkable shifts in student experience. Schools saw fewer behavior referrals, more student-led conflict resolution, and an attendance boost—with kids eager to come to school even when under the weather. A consistent character language also took root, strengthening both peer and family connections across grade levels.

When students actively engage with character education, they begin to see their classmates and teachers as part of a supportive and caring community. This environment reduces bullying and social exclusion, replacing those negative qualities with understanding and inclusivity. Because of this positive school culture at West Pine Middle School, we have seen almost a 10% drop in major office referrals from last year to this year.
