Curriculum Update: Introducing the P2 Community Scavenger Hunt

We’re excited to share a new resource now available on the P2 Resource Menu: the P2 Community Scavenger Hunt. It’s a hands-on experience designed to bring the 24 Character Strengths to life for your staff while strengthening ties to the community around your school.

What Is the Scavenger Hunt?

Working in teams, district and school staff visit locations throughout the community, complete challenges rooted in the character strengths, and capture real examples of character strengths and the Other People Mindset in action. Along the way, staff also carve out time for personal reflection, better understanding their own character strengths before guiding students to do the same.

The result is an experience that:

  • Builds camaraderie and trust across teams
  • Strengthens partnerships with local community members and businesses
  • Prepares staff to confidently introduce (or reintroduce) P2 in their buildings
  • Creates shared language and shared ownership of P2 across the entire school community

See It In Action: Grand Blanc Community Schools

Grand Blanc Community Schools in Michigan kicked off their district-wide P2 launch with exactly this kind of scavenger hunt. Every faculty member took part, including teachers, administrators, custodians, cafeteria staff, hall monitors, and bus drivers, rotating through community stations designed to bring specific character strengths to life. At one stop, staff tackled a CrossFit workout to explore prudence. At another, they sat down with residents of Abbey Park Assisted Living to experience the strength of perspective firsthand. The day gave their team space to reflect on their own strengths before introducing P2 to students, and it set the tone for a year built on shared language and authentic connection across the district.

The scavenger hunt was a unique way to spend time getting to know a new topic that was to be brought into our classrooms,” chemistry teacher Lindsay Meyer said. “It allowed us time to reflect on our personal character strengths and weaknesses. It made me excited to do the same thing with my students.

Kick Off Your Next School Year with P2

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to open the 2026-2027 school year, the scavenger hunt is an ideal fit for your back-to-school professional development. A few things to consider as you plan:

  • Secure time. Most schools run the hunt as a half-day of PD, so district approval is an early step.
  • Decide on scope. The templates support both district-wide and single-school implementations.
  • If multiple schools participate, consider hosting on the same day to streamline logistics and minimize disruption for your community partners.
  • If a single school participates, aim wide. Invite administration, teachers, counselors, support staff, custodians, child nutrition, bus drivers, PTO, and more. The broader your invite list, the stronger the shared ownership.

If participation needs to be limited, we recommend prioritizing teachers, counselors/social workers, and principals.

Your First Steps

Once you’ve set a date, form a small planning committee and designate someone to be the “recorder.” Make copies of the The Planning Guide and the P2 Community Scavenger Hunt Slide Deck. Hold your first meeting to clarify roles, set a planning timeline, and schedule follow-ups.

Lastly, make it your own! Everything is customizable to your school community.
