Students Turn Positivity into Action with Service Learning Project
By Catherine HarmanAt Whiteford Elementary, character education isn’t just a lesson—it’s a way of life. Through The Positivity Project, students are learning to recognize and develop the 24 character strengths that help them become positive contributors to their communities. One recent example of this came to life through a heartfelt and creative service learning project centered around Whiteford’s beloved therapy dog, Biscuit.
Students organized a schoolwide Penny War to raise funds to support Biscuit’s care, including her veterinary needs, food, and other supplies. The fundraiser was a huge success—not just in the money raised, but in the character shown by every student who participated.
The project brought many of the core values of The Positivity Project into action. Enthusiasm was seen as students decorated collection jars, made signs, and encouraged their peers to join in. Teamwork and leadership emerged as students worked together across classrooms to organize the event and make it fun for everyone. Kindness, love, and gratitude were at the heart of it all, as students donated their own money and shared how much Biscuit means to them. Even during the competitive moments, students modeled fairness, integrity, and humility, keeping the focus on the good of our school community.
The Positivity Project emphasizes that “Other People Matter,” and this project showed just how deeply Whiteford students have embraced that mindset. Their actions demonstrated empathy, compassion, and a willingness to make a positive difference—not only for Biscuit, but for each other.
Biscuit brings comfort, joy, and calm to the school community every day. Through this service learning experience, students had the opportunity to give back to her, while growing as thoughtful, responsible, and caring individuals. It was a beautiful reminder that when students are given the tools and the trust to lead, they rise with character and heart.
